Sparta, Mystras, and Pylos
Today was a beautiful day. We started out at the Nafplio Archaeology Museum which had many nice ceramic objects as well as everyday objects from ancient life. From there, we took a bus ride to a small sanctuary of Artemis in Sparta which was home to ancient rituals of flogging which the Romans enjoyed watching. We were also "greeted" by gypsies returning to their camp. We then drove up the hill to Mystras to take a look at the ancient Byzantine city overlooking modern Sparta. We hiked up to the Pantanassa monastery where we were greeted by modern day nuns. Many of us purchased handmade linens and icons that the nuns had made. After a nice lunch in Mystras, we bought snacks for our long bus ride to Pylos that involved many hair pin turns and breathtaking views. In Pylos, we then had free time to walk around and explore the shops and church while looking at the Adriatic Sea. All in all a great day!!!
