Fwd:

Our first full day in Nafplio began with the customary breakfast at the hotel followed by the 30 minute bus ride to Nemea. The site featured a bathhouse, a partially collapsed temple, and a small but fully-stocked museum. As the first site that we were truly able to walk within, Nemea allowed us to literally step into history!! As we walked among the fallen column drums and through the cella of the temple we felt very much involved at the site. Those with sharp eyesight will see our canine friend standing on top of Cecily! The on-site museum held many artifacts, including pieces of the Panhellenic running stadium, the Aidonian treasures, and various fragments of pottery. Our dog friend followed the bus up to the stadium where we reenacted the walk through the athlete's tunnel and the race through the stadium. Those who know me (Céline) will not to be surprised to hear that my athletic prowess has not improved and I came in stark last place.

We returned to our bus for a short bus ride and arrived at the renowned Mycenae. Despite the grand number of tour buses, we fell in love with the rolling hills, high citadel, and the exceptional view from first glance. Vania gave a tragic account of the Illicit art/Black Market, featuring details of stolen Mycenean art. We excitedly scurried around the other groups to admire the Lion's Gate, tombs of the royal family of Agamemnon, and open court spaces. Most of us challenged ourselves and descended down the cistern, despite the sliminess! Following that, we observed the improvements of the construction of Mycenaean tombs over the centuries. The most impressive and the most recent construction was the tourist-ridden Treasury of Atreus.

Once again we hopped on the bus to proceed to the sanctuary and theatre of Asklepeieon. Though it was supposed to be saved for our last destination at the site, we accidentally went to the theatre first. The extremely well persevered and remarkable theatre that had dramatic acoustics and incredible views. The climb to the top was taxing but very gratifying, and we were treated to a private concert from Maddie Krips, who sang our Alma Mater (Blue and White for aye!). Then we hiked down the steps at a glacial pace, taking many a picture. Next, we trekked to the sanctuary and heard from Keara about the various ancient spiritual and clinical cures for patients. Finally, we took a quick turn around the petite museum that housed assorted marble statues from the site.

Returning to our newest paradise, we separated into smaller groups for dinner and a night of roaming free. Everyone took advantage of the beautiful water vista and sunset for some pictures and a relaxing gelato. Another long but fulfilled day - completed!
